Re-reading Sunrise: ten passages that read differently after the trailer

Suzanne Collins built Sunrise on the Reaping on dramatic irony — every reader arrives already knowing how Haymitch’s story ends, and the novel wrings its tension from the gap between what he hopes and what we know. Watching the film’s first footage does something similar to the book itself: passages that read one way in 2025 read very differently with faces attached.

The early chapters’ small domestic details — Haymitch’s mother, his brother, the girl he loves — now play as an inventory of what the Capitol will take. The Quarter Quell’s doubled reaping, which the book treats with grim procedure, gains a new charge when you’ve seen the scale of it staged. And the novel’s quietest thread, Haymitch’s understanding of how the Games are edited for the audience, lands harder in a campaign that is itself so carefully cut.
