Every premium format for Sunrise on the Reaping in Australia, and where to see it
IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX and Dolby Atmos sessions are confirmed across Australia, with a new format-specific poster for each.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will screen in four premium formats across Australia: IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX and Dolby Atmos, with tickets already on sale at Hoyts, Event, Village, Dendy, Reading and Palace. Each format has its own one-sheet, and all four are now out.
IMAX is the headline. This is the first film in the franchise shot for the format, and IMAX has confirmed more than 45 minutes of it will play in the taller 1.90:1 expanded ratio. The picture opens up when the tributes rise into the arena, the same trick Catching Fire pulled in 2013, except that time the expansion was done in post; this one was shot for it on IMAX-certified digital cameras, per cinematographer Jo Willems to Entertainment Weekly. We covered the technical side last week.

At 158 minutes, that’s a little under a third of the film at full height. Australian IMAX sessions are at IMAX Melbourne, IMAX Sydney, Village Fountain Gate, Hoyts Chadstone, Hoyts Melbourne Central, Hoyts Blacktown, Dendy Canberra, Event Pacific Fair, Event Innaloo and Hoyts Carousel. The IMAX Melbourne 6pm advance on Wednesday 18 November sold out within days of tickets going live, so book the Thursday sessions now rather than later.

4DX is the one we didn’t expect. It’s a franchise first: motion seats, wind, water, scent and strobe synced to the picture. The 4DX poster puts Haymitch on a cliff edge, Panem’s meadow and volcano above the line and District 12’s smokestacks underneath, which is the whole book in one image. Find it at Village Century City in Melbourne, Event George Street, Parramatta and Castle Hill in Sydney, Event Chermside and Pacific Fair in Queensland, Event Marion in Adelaide and Event Innaloo in Perth.

ScreenX wraps the arena across three walls, and it’s the easiest premium upgrade to find: 17 Hoyts sites in New South Wales (Bankstown, Blacktown, Broadway, Charlestown, both Chatswoods, Cronulla, Eastgardens, Entertainment Quarter, Erina, Green Hills, Mt Druitt, Penrith, Tweed City, Warrawong, Warringah Mall, Wetherill Park), Hoyts Melbourne Central, and Event at Robina, Loganholme, Campbelltown, Shellharbour and Innaloo. The ScreenX poster is the only one of the four without a printed date: Haymitch on his launch plate in the white poncho, a blade in each hand, flower beds radiating out across the grass, the whole thing framed as if you’re looking out through the auditorium walls.

Dolby Atmos is sound, not picture, and it’s in dozens of auditoriums nationally: every ScreenX Hoyts site above plus Highpoint and Karrinyup, 14 Event sites in New South Wales, 13 in Queensland and Palmerston in the Northern Territory, Village Crown, Plenty Valley, Knox, Fountain Gate and Jam Factory, Reading at Auburn, Charlestown, Millers Junction, Harbour Town, Newmarket, West Lakes, Elizabeth and Busselton, plus Lido Hawthorn and Palace Coburg. One honest note: the Dolby poster is branded “Discover it at Dolby Cinema”, and Australia has no Dolby Cinema auditoriums. What we get is the Atmos mix, which is still the right way to hear the arena in a room this size.

Our pick, if you’re only going once: IMAX for the arena rise, then ScreenX on the second viewing for the landscapes. 4DX is for the people who read the chapters with the volcano and thought, yes, I’d like to feel that.
